Michael Bisping Raises Concerns Over Tom Aspinall's UFC Comeback Ambiguities
The heavyweight division had anticipated a fresh start following Jon Jones' retirement and Tom Aspinall's elevation to undisputed champion. However, Aspinall’s comeback after a 14-month hiatus took an unexpected turn during UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, leading to a controversial outcome. Scheduled to defend his title against Ciryl Gane, the fight ended abruptly in the first round due to an accidental eye poke that left Aspinall unable to continue, resulting in a no-contest ruling.
The incident occurred at the 4:35 mark of Round 1, when Gane inadvertently poked Aspinall in both eyes. After nearly four minutes of recovery time and assessments by two cageside doctors, Aspinall expressed that his vision was still compromised, prompting referee Jason Herzog to halt the match. Consequently, Aspinall retained his title under unfortunate circumstances.
In the aftermath, Aspinall was diagnosed with bilateral traumatic Brown’s syndrome and has since undergone double eye surgery, casting doubt on his return timeline. While he has resumed light training and sparring, clarity regarding his comeback remains elusive. This uncertainty has led to frustration from former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, who recently voiced his concerns about the lack of transparency regarding Aspinall’s condition on the Believe You Me podcast alongside Paul Felder. Bisping noted, “I’m still not clear to fight. But he’s been very vague with the details.”
Bisping, reflecting on his own experience with eye injuries, expressed skepticism over the limited information coming from Aspinall’s camp. He compared the two situations, sharing that he underwent a serious eye surgery and managed to return to the ring more swiftly than Aspinall's current ordeal. He hinted that there might be undisclosed factors affecting Aspinall’s situation, stating, “Maybe, you look between the lines, there’s something fucking weird going on.”
Despite their past camaraderie, Bisping's comments suggest a growing distance between the two fighters. Meanwhile, the UFC continues to progress in the heavyweight division without Aspinall, with Alex Pereira set to face Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. The winner is expected to meet Aspinall in a title unification fight when he is cleared to compete.
Adding complexity to Aspinall’s future, he has recently appointed boxing promoter Eddie Hearn as his manager, a move that has drawn attention due to Hearn's previous disputes with UFC CEO Dana White. Hearn has publicly stated that Aspinall is undercompensated and has even suggested the possibility of Aspinall leaving the promotion altogether. As fans await further updates on Aspinall's health and future, the situation remains fraught with speculation.
