Monroe and Summerfield Baseball Teams Advance in State Tournament

Monroe and Summerfield have emerged as the representatives for the Monroe County Region after both secured victories in their respective Regional semifinal games on Wednesday, June 3. They will now compete for titles on Saturday. Unfortunately, the season has come to a close for New Boston Huron and St. Mary Catholic Central, who were unable to advance.

In Division 1, Monroe achieved an impressive 5-0 victory over Livonia Franklin in Saline. The Trojans, who entered the state tournament with a below-average record, improved to 18-17 with this remarkable win.

In Division 2, Tecumseh edged out New Boston Huron with a narrow 4-3 win in Adrian. Huron had opportunities to clinch the game but left the tying and winning runners stranded on second and third in the final inning. Huron's coach, Phil Yancey, noted that despite having multiple chances throughout the game, they could not secure the crucial hit needed to turn the game in their favor. The team, ranked No. 2 in the state, concludes its season with a record of 31-6.

Meanwhile, in Division 3, St. Mary Catholic Central faced Plymouth Christian and started strong, taking an early lead with three runs in the first inning. However, the Falcons could not maintain their advantage, ultimately losing 12-6. SMCC coach Jared Janssed expressed disappointment, citing too many walks as a key factor in the loss. The Falcons finished their season with a respectable record of 25-8.

In Division 4, Summerfield dominated Dansville with a score of 12-2 in Petersburg. Josh Horak delivered an outstanding performance, contributing a single, double, and triple while driving in three runs. Summerfield coach Reid Olmstead praised the team's effort, saying, “That was awesome, exactly what we needed.” The Bulldogs now carry a 17-7 record into the Regional finals at Spring Arbor College against Kalamazoo Hackett on Saturday, June 6.
