Monroe County Softball Teams Shine in District Championships
This past weekend showcased impressive performances by several softball teams from Monroe County as they competed in the District tournaments. Gibraltar Carlson, Airport, Milan, and Whiteford emerged victorious in their respective divisions, highlighting the strength of local talent.
In the Division 1 finals at Monroe, Gibraltar Carlson demonstrated dominance with a 16-5 semifinal win over Woodhaven. The team’s momentum continued into the championship game, where they defeated Bedford 10-4. Coach Jason Gyolai praised his players, stating, “The girls have been building to this day all year. It’s been fun.” Key contributors included Lauren Dunwoody, Kiley Lewandowski, and Kennedy Warren, each tallying three hits during the semifinals. Addison Skinner not only secured the pitching victory but also homered in the final match.
Airport's Division 2 championship was marked by a powerful offensive display, as they overwhelmed both Jefferson (16-0) and Flat Rock (18-3). Coach Jess Irwin noted the team's focus, saying, “Every girl at the plate today found a way to contribute.” Brooklyn Martin led the charge with a home run and a 2-hitter performance against Jefferson, while several teammates also contributed with multiple hits throughout the tournament.
Milan, competing in Division 2, saw a resurgence in their hitting prowess, culminating in a 19-0 victory over Adrian in the finals after a close 2-1 win against Tecumseh. Coach Micah Higa expressed pride in the team’s recent adjustments at the plate, which proved crucial for their success. Kendyll Fell’s impressive one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the final game highlighted the team's strong pitching.
Meanwhile, Whiteford claimed the Division 3 title, thanks to Peyton Welch’s remarkable performance on the mound, where she struck out 22 batters across two games and allowed only one run. Coach Matt VanBrandt commended Welch's command, stating, “Her command was outstanding.” The team’s collective effort was evident, with players like Bailey Spradling and Addeson Cousino stepping up offensively.
These district championships serve as a testament to the hard work and determination of Monroe County’s softball programs, setting the stage for an exciting postseason ahead.
