Nagelsmann Sticks with Winning Formula Ahead of Ivory Coast Clash
Germany's national football coach, Julian Nagelsmann, expressed his intention to maintain the same lineup that convincingly defeated World Cup newcomers Curacao last week in preparation for their upcoming match against Ivory Coast. Set to take place at Toronto Stadium on Saturday, this encounter poses a more formidable challenge for the German squad.
Despite the anticipated difficulty, Nagelsmann remains optimistic about his team's readiness. "There's no obvious reason to change anything," he stated during a press conference. He added, "We will sleep on it and see if everybody wakes up fit and well tomorrow, and then we'll take a decision."
In response to criticism aimed at Leroy Sane's performance against Curacao, Nagelsmann defended his player, asserting that the criticism was "really not justified after that game." He noted, "Some say he's not eager enough, but he really moved around a lot during that game."
Since taking charge of the German national team in 2023, Nagelsmann is eager to guide his players beyond the World Cup group stage for the first time since their 2014 victory in Brazil. He emphasized the need to prepare for Ivory Coast’s speed and defensive capabilities, highlighting the threat posed by French-born Ivorian winger Nicolas Pepe, who was highly active in their last match.
The upcoming match holds special significance for German defender Jonathan Tah, whose father hails from Ivory Coast, making this encounter particularly poignant for him. Meanwhile, Ivorian coach Emerse Fae is aiming for a victory, stating, "We're coming to beat them," and expressing hope that the Germans will underestimate their resolve.
