NBA legend set to join son at Wagner in special advisor role

Tracy McGrady has been front and center during NBC's coverage of the NBA playoffs, but has taken a behind-the-scenes role at a small college in New York City.

USA TODAY Sports reports that the Basketball Hall of Famer has accepted a strategic advisory role with Wagner.

"We are pleased to welcome Tracy McGrady to Wagner in this advisory capacity at an important moment for our institution," Wagner president Jeffrey Doggett said in a release. "As we continue to thoughtfully strengthen our men's basketball program and overall student-athlete experience, Tracy brings a unique combination of perspective, excellence, and commitment to development both on and off the court. His engagement aligns with our broader vision of preparing students not only for success in their fields but for life, and we look forward to exploring this partnership in a deliberate and meaningful way."

McGrady joins the Seahawks basketball operations group a month after his son, Laymen, committed to Wagner following a redshirt season at Oral Roberts last year.

"Stepping into this role is really personal for me since I did not go to college. Being around this community, where gritty coaches like P.J. Carlesimo and Dan Hurley got their start, excites me just as much as basketball. It is a priority for me that goes well beyond wins and losses in the NEC. It is about making sure potential is realized both for the short and the long term for these dedicated athletes and the staff," McGrady said.

McGrady will be tasked with strategic player development, the creation of strategic NIL investments, and expanding Wagner's overall brand.
