Nets' Pursuit of Lakers' Austin Reaves Faces Challenges
The Brooklyn Nets are entering the offseason after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, concluding with a 20-62 record that granted them the sixth overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft. As they aim to build for the future, the Nets are also looking to enhance their roster through free agency, but their interest in guard Austin Reaves may prove difficult to realize.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to retain Reaves, whose affection for the franchise and his promising partnership with star player Luka Dončić are strong incentives for him to remain in L.A. "The Lakers are widely expected to re-sign Reaves," Stein noted in a report shared by Bleacher Report's Timothy Rapp.
Despite Reaves being one of the most sought-after free agents available this summer, the Lakers appear determined to keep him. Stein added that while there is uncertainty surrounding outside interest in Reaves due to the challenges of enticing him away from the Lakers, teams like Brooklyn and Detroit have emerged as potential suitors.
With reports indicating that the Nets are prepared to extend a four-year, $178.5 million max contract to Reaves, their eagerness to secure him is clear. However, Reaves may prefer to remain in Los Angeles, where the Lakers can offer him a more lucrative five-year deal worth $239 million.
As the situation unfolds, the Lakers' efforts to retain LeBron James will also play a crucial role in Reaves' decision, potentially steering him elsewhere if the team cannot accommodate both stars. The Nets, with their significant cap space, could be ready to act if Reaves seeks a new opportunity.
