NFL Star Aldon Smith Reflects on Struggles in Final Days Before Untimely Death
Just days before his passing at the age of 36, former NFL linebacker Aldon Smith candidly shared his challenges during a podcast interview, expressing that he was "struggling" and had "definitely had better days." The conversation took place in a video posted by Laced Up, a podcast hosted by barber Tee Maultsby, where guests share personal stories while receiving haircuts.
In the segment, Smith discussed his emotional state, revealing that he had been grappling with a long-standing personal issue. Although he chose not to delve into the specifics, he mentioned, "It's along the lines of something I think I've been dealing with my whole life, and I'm just struggling with accepting how it's playing out right now." Despite the difficulties he was facing, he maintained a sense of hope, stating, "I'm in a place of gratitude right now." He acknowledged the recent hardships but noted, "Things are starting to happen."
During the interview, Smith also reflected on his return to San Francisco, describing the experience as "bittersweet." He appreciated the warm welcome he received but admitted, "But I don't feel as if I'm ready to be back here right now."
The San Francisco 49ers announced Smith's death on June 13, expressing their devastation over the news. "Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization," the team stated. They fondly remembered him for his infectious smile and extended condolences to his family and friends. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
In the hours leading up to his death, Smith had been involved in charitable efforts, delivering pizzas to a homeless organization, according to his friend Amir Shirazi. Tragically, Shirazi found Smith unresponsive in his vehicle later that day, prompting a call to emergency services, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Drafted seventh overall by the 49ers in 2011, Smith made a significant impact during his four seasons with the team, earning a Pro Bowl selection and First-team All-Pro honors in 2012. He also played for the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, with 2020 marking his final year in the league.
