Oklahoma State's Preston Stout Claims NCAA Golf Title in Nail-Biting Finale
In a captivating showdown on Monday at the NCAA Men’s National Championship, two golfers with vastly different backgrounds faced off in a high-stakes duel at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. Oklahoma State junior Preston Stout, ranked among the top three amateur golfers globally, and Alabama sophomore William Jennings, who had faced challenges in his collegiate career, delivered a thrilling climax to the tournament.
Stout entered the final round with an impressive resume, boasting seven career victories, four of which were secured this season, alongside his participation in last year’s Walker Cup. In contrast, Jennings had only recently revitalized his game after struggling through a rough freshman year, including a moment when he shot a 92 in his first college tournament, leading his coach to withdraw him from a subsequent competition.
The tension peaked as the two golfers approached the final holes. Stout, who had built a five-shot lead, faced a challenging back nine but managed to secure a birdie on the par-5 18th hole with a meticulous pitch shot that left him three feet from the pin. He finished the round with a score of three-under 69, totaling 14 under for the tournament. Meanwhile, Jennings, who had rallied with four birdies in six holes, stumbled on his final hole, missing a crucial putt to finish tied with a 69. “I wish I wouldn't have made it so stressful coming down the 18th,” Stout reflected on his victory.
Stout celebrated his triumph with his teammates, who were anxiously monitoring Jennings’ performance. Conversely, Jennings felt the weight of disappointment as he was left to process his near-comeback with only his coach by his side. “It’s tough to come up short like that,” he shared with Golf Channel, having aimed to prove himself after a rocky start to his college career.
Stout's victory marked a significant achievement, making him the first Oklahoma State player to win the NCAA individual title since Matthew Wolff in 2019. As the team competition also saw intense action, four teams were pushed into a playoff, with Stanford and UCLA advancing to the match play rounds. The championship continues with quarterfinal and semifinal matches scheduled for Tuesday, leading to the final on Wednesday.
