Packers Focus on Receiver Cohesion After Key Offseason Moves
The Green Bay Packers have taken significant steps this offseason to solidify their receiving corps by parting ways with Dontayvion Wicks and Romeo Doubs, while securing long-term contracts for Jayden Reed and Christian Watson. Together with 2025 first-round draft pick Matthew Golden and tight end Tucker Kraft, these players are expected to form the backbone of the team’s aerial attack in the coming years.
In light of recent seasons marked by discontent among certain players regarding their roles, the Packers are also aiming for improved team harmony as they look ahead to 2026. The considerable financial commitments—over $140 million—made to Watson and Reed reflect the organization’s confidence in their abilities and attitudes. Both players have garnered praise for their dedication and work ethic, which could help cultivate a more unified atmosphere.
During a media session at Ray Nitschke Field, head coach Matt LaFleur praised Watson, who recently signed a four-year, $92 million deal. “He embodies what we want to be about. He’s a team-first kind of guy. Never once over the course of four years have I ever heard him complain about not getting the ball,” LaFleur said. Watson’s performance last season, especially post-recovery from an ACL injury, showcased his importance to the offense.
LaFleur emphasized the duo's value in the locker room, stating, “Those guys are A+. You can’t ask for better guys. Both of those guys are deserving of what they got (paid).” He expressed excitement about building around these players and their potential contributions alongside quarterback Jordan Love. With both Watson and Reed healthy this offseason, LaFleur believes their ongoing development is crucial for the team.
Watson, in an indication of his character, committed to maintaining his work ethic, declaring, “I’m going to go out there every day with the mindset to continue to earn that contract every single day.” Meanwhile, Love also highlighted the potential impact of Savion Williams, last year’s third-round pick, who is poised for growth in his second year. With clear priorities established, the Packers now look to validate their offseason decisions on the field.
