Vikings Defender Blake Cashman’s Future May Be in the Spotlight

Blake Cashman, a linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, showcased his energy during a Christmas Day game against the Green Bay Packers, rallying the crowd with a crucial defensive play. Since joining the team in 2024, Cashman has established himself as a key component of Minnesota's defense, drawing attention for his leadership and performance.

As the Vikings look ahead, discussions about contract extensions are heating up, particularly concerning right tackle Brian O’Neill. However, Cashman’s contract, which expires after the 2026 season, is also a topic of interest. His role in defensive coordinator Brian Flores's scheme makes it likely that the team will consider extending his stay.

Cashman has made a strong case for an extension through his on-field contributions. With a current salary of $7.5 million, which is comparable to contracts for other linebackers like Derrick Barnes of the Detroit Lions, many believe Cashman deserves a similar deal. Eric Wilson, another former Viking, recently signed a three-year contract worth $22.5 million, further setting a financial precedent for Cashman.

Since his arrival in Minnesota, Cashman has been impressive, starting 27 games and accumulating 256 tackles, including 129 solo tackles, and tallying significant defensive stats such as 6.5 sacks and 10 passes defended. His Pro Football Focus ratings reflect his effectiveness; he earned a defensive grade of 72.0 in 2024 and improved his tackling grade to 83.4 in 2025. Last season, he recorded 144 tackles in just 13 games, projecting to nearly 188 tackles over a full season, which would rank among the top single-season totals in NFL history.

Despite some concern about his injury history, Cashman is regarded as a valuable asset for Flores's defense. Will Ragatz from SI.com emphasized his underrated status, noting that while the Vikings drafted rookie Jake Golday, he is seen more as a complement to Cashman than a replacement. If an extension does not materialize, Cashman could become a free agent next March, paving the way for Golday to step into a more prominent role.
