Padres Falter in Seventh Inning Collapse Against Nationals

In a dramatic turn of events during Saturday's game, the San Diego Padres fell to the Washington Nationals 9-4 at Nationals Park, largely due to a disastrous six-run seventh inning. Padres starter Michael King had been effective through the first six frames, but the momentum shifted dramatically when he was unable to retire a single batter in the seventh.

King, who had thrown under 70 pitches and kept the Nationals (30-29) at bay, faced four batters in the seventh before leaving the game with the bases loaded after hitting Nationals center fielder Dylan Crews. "When you're a sinker ball pitcher that's exactly what you're looking for... it was just that seventh inning, I felt like he was going to get another one of those ground balls and just didn't quite get it in the zone," Padres manager Craig Stammen remarked.

Bradgley Rodriguez, who took over for King, could not stop the Nationals' surge. A fielder's choice ground ball from Drew Millas resulted in controversy when Tatis was unable to complete a double play, leading to a safe call at second base that the Padres challenged but failed to overturn. Stammen was ejected while discussing the call, marking his first ejection as manager.

Despite the setbacks, the Padres (32-25) had their moments, with Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado each hitting solo home runs. Tatis's home run was particularly notable as it marked his first of the season and came off a fastball, traveling an impressive 451 feet to left field. "He's been carrying that burden... it was a good celebration in the dugout," Stammen said of Tatis's long-awaited homer.

While Washington extended their lead with two more runs in the eighth, reliever Brad Lord secured the win for the Nationals, striking out two in two hitless innings. The matchup concluded with the series rubber game scheduled for Sunday, featuring Griffin Canning for San Diego, who is seeking his first win of the season.
