Padres' Lower Order Shines in Victory Over Reds
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres celebrated a much-needed 6-2 victory against the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park on Monday night, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in baseball. Third baseman Manny Machado emphasized this sentiment earlier in the week, stating, "You don't win a championship by just one player. It takes a whole goddamn village to do it."
Despite a lackluster performance from the top of the batting order, which managed only one hit in 16 at-bats, the Padres found their rhythm thanks to contributions from their bench players. Notably, catcher Freddy Fermin continued his impressive streak, hitting a home run for the third consecutive game, while left fielder Samad Taylor also played a pivotal role in the win.
Starting pitcher Walker Buehler had a challenging outing, failing to keep the Reds scoreless into the fifth inning. After allowing a series of hits, he was replaced by right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez. Buehler completed 4 2/3 innings, throwing 86 pitches, yielding one run on eight hits, walking two, and striking out four. Rodriguez later allowed the Reds to take the lead in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly from Edwin Arroyo.
The turning point came in the seventh when the Padres finally broke through against Reds' pitcher Andrew Abbott, who had retired ten batters in a row. Back-to-back doubles from Xander Bogaerts and Gavin Sheets tied the game at 2-2, marking the end of Abbott's night. In a flurry of action, Jase Bowen and Taylor executed successive bunt singles to reclaim the lead for San Diego. Although Fermin's bunt resulted in a fielding error, the Padres faced a tense moment with the bases loaded and no outs. However, Rodriguez managed to escape the jam by striking out three consecutive batters.
The series continues on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m., with Lucas Giolito (2-1, 4.86 ERA) set to pitch for the Padres against Chase Burns (7-1, 2.05 ERA) for the Reds.
