Pirates Face Challenges After Thrilling Series Against Dodgers
PITTSBURGH — A dramatic comeback marked Wednesday night at PNC Park, where the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied from a five-run deficit in the seventh inning to secure a 9-8 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending a four-game losing streak. However, the excitement was overshadowed by injury concerns that could leave the team at a disadvantage for the foreseeable future.
In the series opener, Paul Skenes showcased a strong performance, delivering his first quality start since May 12 and effectively managing a powerful Dodgers lineup. Unfortunately, once Skenes exited, the bullpen faltered dramatically. Wilber Dotel, who had been impressive in earlier outings, struggled to retire any of the six batters he faced, while Brandan Bidois also had a rough outing. This combination of pitching woes and defensive errors allowed the Dodgers to score ten runs in a pivotal seventh inning.
The final game of the series saw Mitch Keller struggle once again, giving up five runs over four innings, pushing his ERA to 5.14. The Pirates fell short in a comeback attempt, losing by two runs as the Dodgers managed to extend their lead late in the game. Following their recent sweep by the Braves, the Pirates now hold a 1-5 record against the top two teams in the National League. Manager Don Kelly acknowledged the talent of their opponents, stating, “They’re good teams. I think that we’re a good team. I know it sucks when we go 1-5 in those games.”
Injury concerns are becoming a significant issue for the Pirates, particularly with the loss of key players. Center fielder Oneil Cruz, who was set to play on Tuesday but was scratched, has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to fractures in his left hand. Cruz has been instrumental in the Pirates’ offensive success this season, boasting a batting line of .264/.350/.427 with 14 home runs and 21 stolen bases. “We’re not going to replace Oneil and what he’s meant ... how he was trying to be in there and play,” Kelly said, highlighting Cruz’s growth and contributions.
Additionally, shortstop Konnor Griffin is sidelined with a forearm muscle strain and is not expected to return immediately. However, he has started a throwing program and reported positive feelings, although Kelly noted that his recovery will take longer than just a few days. Fortunately, Endy Rodríguez, who left Wednesday's game due to hip discomfort, is expected to remain active and will not be placed on the injured list.
The Pirates have shown they can bounce back this season, but with key players missing, the test of their resilience is just beginning.
