Reds Closer Emilio Pagán Makes Progress in Hamstring Rehabilitation

ST. LOUIS – The Cincinnati Reds received a boost just before their weekend series against the Cardinals as closer Emilio Pagán joined the team on the road for the first time since struggling with a hamstring injury that sidelined him for months. Pagán had to leave the game at Wrigley Field exactly a month ago due to a setback in what was initially a mild injury he was managing.

On this occasion, Pagán took a significant step forward by jogging on the field, marking his first time running since the injury. He described the experience as a “big step, a big hurdle,” adding, “I didn’t have any issues. Felt good.” While he acknowledges that he is still at least a month away from making a full return, Pagán remains hopeful that he can expedite his recovery process.

Even while sidelined, Pagán kept his arm active, throwing from a seated position before being cleared to put weight on his injured leg. He stated, “Throwing’s the easiest part right now,” and expressed his intent to stay with the team until he begins a minor-league rehab assignment. Although he hasn’t thrown off a mound since his injury, he anticipates resuming that by the end of next week.

Pagán emphasized, “Once I get to the mound, at least where my head’s at – obviously, I’ve got to defer to our doctors – but I shouldn’t need too much of a buildup time.” He is aware that the team's medical staff may have a different perspective on his readiness to return, as they aim to prevent further injury.

The Reds are in dire need of reliable bullpen support, especially given their struggles in that area since early May. Pagán, who recorded a career-high 32 saves last season with a 2.88 ERA, was looking to rebound this year until his hamstring issue arose. He noted, “It’s my job to push to go as fast as I can. And it’s their job to hold me back so that I don’t re-injure myself,” indicating a collaborative effort in his recovery.
