Former Boston Celtics All-Star guard Rajon Rondo has reportedly come up just short in his pursuit of the head-coaching job with the New Orleans Pelicans.

ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Pelicans were hiring former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley on a five-year contract.

Rondo, who spent the first eight-plus seasons of his 16-year NBA career with the Celtics and made four All-Star teams, reportedly interviewed for the opening in the Big Easy in April.

It was later reported on May 5 that the 40-year-old was among four finalists for the position, a group that didn't include Mosley.

The Magic fired Mosley on May 4, however, and the 47-year-old immediately became a candidate for the gig in New Orleans.

Rondo has never been an NBA head coach but was a special assistant on Doc Rivers' staff with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2025-26 campaign.
