Riverview Baseball Team Anticipates Promising 2027 Season with Full Roster Return
On June 5, Riverview's baseball team, led by Owen Metz as the starting pitcher, faced District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep in the opening round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs. Miles Duncan caught for the team in this rematch, while Lukas Duncan held down center field, supported by Ian Stempfer in left and Owen Orbich in right. The infield featured Liam Tomlinson at third, Rex Roberts at shortstop, Ashton Saunders at second base, and Jake Sprajcar at first, with Dom DelRosso serving as the designated hitter.
This lineup may carry over into next season, as head coach Bill Gras is excited about the prospects of having all players and key reserves Ben Radelet and Nate Boyer return. The Raiders, who finished this season with a 15-8 record and took third place in the WPIAL, are entirely composed of underclassmen, setting the stage for an ambitious 2027 campaign.
Despite a 4-0 loss to Mercyhurst Prep, Gras praised his team's effort, stating, “The guys played their hearts out against a very good Mercyhurst Prep team. The guys never quit. As long as they had at-bats, they were battling.” The Raiders and Lakers played competitively, but Riverview struggled with three errors that allowed all runs to score in one challenging half-inning.
Riverview had opportunities to score, notably loading the bases in the sixth inning, but were unable to capitalize. The team’s journey through the postseason echoed last year's experience, where they finished as runners-up for the Section 3 title and made a solid playoff run, ultimately earning a place in the state tournament.
As the team prepares for the next two years, they will transition to Class A, and Gras is optimistic about the future. He noted the positive response from players to new coaching staff this season, emphasizing, “It’s all positive going into next year.” This summer, players will engage in various leagues and activities to maintain their skills and prepare for the upcoming season, while Gras plans to introduce incoming eighth graders to the program soon.
