Sage Steele Reflects on Racism and Career Choices After Leaving ESPN

INDIANAPOLIS — Sage Steele took to the stage at the Life Surge event, recalling a troubling encounter from her past that shaped her resilience. The incident occurred in 1989 while she was a senior at Carmel High School, where she was confronted by four boys, one of whom she believed to be a friend. Steele, who described herself as a "dork" with aspirations to become an ESPN sportscaster, was shocked when the boys hurled racist insults at her, including a demand to "go back to Africa." "I'd never had anyone call me that until I got to Carmel," Steele, 53, shared with an audience of thousands.

Having moved frequently as a military child, Steele faced this moment in a new environment. It was a turning point that compelled her to report the incident to the school principal alongside her mother. However, the principal dismissed her account, telling them, "I don't believe you," which left Steele feeling defeated and targeted.

In the midst of this turmoil, a German teacher named Agnes Kim offered Steele crucial support. Kim reassured her, saying, "'Just by you being here, you are doing more for Carmel High School and these kids, who haven't seen a lot of the world, than we can ever do for you. Stay strong. Stand tall. Don't let them break you.'" This encouragement helped Steele regain her strength and confidence.

Fast forward to 2023, Steele faced a significant pivot in her career. After achieving her lifelong dream of working at ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor in 2007, she found herself at a crossroads following the network's COVID vaccine mandate. Despite her initial compliance to keep her job, she expressed her discomfort about the mandate during an appearance on Jay Cutler's podcast, leading to her suspension and a public apology. "I think it's sick, and I think it's scary for any employer to tell anyone what to do with their bodies," Steele remarked.

Steele soon noticed a disparity in how political discussions were handled at ESPN, which prompted her to reconsider her role within the company. Ultimately, she decided to take a stand, resulting in her departure from ESPN in August 2023. Now, she hosts "The Sage Steele Show" podcast and makes appearances on various political platforms, reflecting her commitment to speaking her mind.
