Silver Lake Softball Triumphs to Claim State Championship Title
Silver Lake's softball team has achieved its long-held aspiration this season: to secure the state championship. The Eagles celebrated a decisive 4-0 victory against Southeast of Saline in the Class 3A State Championship held in Lawrence.
Head coach Nick Hamilton expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Feels good, feels good to finish.” This victory marks a significant milestone for Hamilton, who has led the Eagles to the state title game four times since 2019, each ending in second place until now. With this win, Silver Lake has claimed its 14th state championship and its first since 2018.
Riley Mohler, the starting pitcher for Silver Lake, delivered an outstanding performance on the mound. “That was really big for me,” Mohler commented. “Once regionals and state hit, I was really on it. I knew I had a job to do and my team knew as well. I think we really performed out there.”
The Eagles established an early lead in the third inning after Kailyn Hanni, Saylor Liggatt, and Taylor Swygert loaded the bases. Paige Heiman walked on a six-pitch at-bat, allowing the first run to cross the plate. Silver Lake held onto their 1-0 lead into the sixth inning when Audrey Kirk hit an RBI single, bringing Mohler home to extend the advantage. The team then capitalized on back-to-back wild pitches, increasing their lead to 4-0.
Mohler's defense shone as she retired the last eight batters of the game, showcasing the team's strong collaboration. “They are one of a kind,” Mohler praised her teammates. “I have been on very few teams that have a great defense like us. We work really great as a team and it really shows on the field that we are a family.”
Trust has been a crucial element in Silver Lake's journey, according to Hamilton, as players remained resilient despite past near misses. The team's confidence in their coaching staff ultimately paid off, allowing them to finally lift the coveted state championship trophy.
