Steelers' Carson Bruener Poised for Expanded Role After Impressive Rookie Season

Carson Bruener, a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers and former standout at the University of Washington, is set to see an increase in his responsibilities following a strong debut season. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Bruener excelled primarily on special teams, where he played 303 snaps and achieved an impressive 91.5 grade from Pro Football Focus—the highest among special team players last season.

Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Crossman praised Bruener's instincts and adaptability, stating, "He's very instinctual... He is just a good football player. Grasps things very quickly and knows how to play the game." Bruener's ability to understand his strengths and limitations has made his transition to the NFL remarkably smooth, according to Crossman.

Bruener, 25, carries a legacy from his father, Mark Bruener, a former tight end for the Steelers, which may have contributed to his seamless entry into professional football. "It doesn't hurt," Crossman remarked, acknowledging the advantages of having such a lineage in the sport.

As Bruener aims to solidify his role, he is currently competing with Malik Harrison for the backup inside linebacker position. Harrison, who joined Pittsburgh after five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, faced challenges last year, playing a career-low 11 games despite starting nine. The competition could prove beneficial for Bruener as he seeks to follow a trajectory similar to his collegiate career, where he evolved from a special teams player to a pivotal defensive asset.

With Bruener's promising skills and experience, first-year coach Mike McCarthy may be looking at a future leader in the making within the Steelers' linebacker corps.
