Stephen Curry Secures Groundbreaking $400 Million Deal with Li-Ning, Earning Praise from Draymond Green
Stephen Curry, the standout guard for the Golden State Warriors, has inked a monumental 10-year endorsement agreement valued at $400 million with the Chinese athletic apparel brand Li-Ning. This deal marks the end of a seven-month hiatus for Curry from the sneaker market, following his departure from Under Armour last November. His exit from the brand was prompted by disappointing sales, a strategic overhaul within the company, and Curry's frustration over the lack of support for his signature line.
After a period of exploring various footwear options, Curry found a suitable partner in Li-Ning. Draymond Green, his teammate and co-host of “The Draymond Green Show,” lauded the significance of this partnership. “Well, number one, Li-Ning is one of the fastest growing shoe brands in the world,” Green stated. He highlighted the potential for Curry to expand his brand internationally, particularly in the Chinese market, and emphasized, “This deal checks all of those boxes, and I’m happy as hell for him. I think this is groundbreaking.”
Green further noted the rarity of such a significant contract at Curry’s age, saying, “To sign a $400 million plus sneaker deal, allegedly, at 38 years old is unheard of.” He added that this agreement underscores Curry's immense influence and the respect he commands within the sports industry.
During his time as a free agent, Curry experimented with various shoes from different manufacturers, notably wearing models from NBA stars Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler, both of whom are associated with Li-Ning. ESPN's Shams Charania shared that Butler played a crucial role in persuading Curry to join Li-Ning by ensuring he received several pairs of shoes during his search for a new brand. “Two of the best shoes that he felt comfortable with... D-Wade’s and Jimmy Butler’s,” Charania remarked.
Butler, who has been affiliated with Li-Ning since 2020 and has his own signature line, has undoubtedly contributed to the brand's appeal, helping it attract a player of Curry's caliber. Remarkably, Curry chose to sign with Li-Ning despite receiving more lucrative offers from other companies, reflecting his confidence in the brand’s vision and capabilities.
