Suryakumar Yadav Expresses Support for Shreyas Iyer as T20I Captaincy Changes Hands

Suryakumar Yadav has shown remarkable sportsmanship in response to the recent shifts within India's T20I team, sharing his joy for Shreyas Iyer, who has been appointed as the new captain for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. This transition signifies a notable change in Indian cricket, with Iyer taking over the leadership role from Suryakumar.

Despite having led India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup earlier this year, Suryakumar has also lost his position in the squad. Speaking at the toss during the Mumbai T20 League, he emphasized the importance of celebrating Iyer's accomplishment. “Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly, three back-to-back T20I captains for India from Mumbai now, and it is a very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket and everyone needs to celebrate that,” he remarked.

This change comes in the wake of comments from chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who provided insight into the decision-making process. “With regards to Surya, obviously it's a tough one having just won the (T20) World Cup. But as it happens after most World Cups, we try and reassess what your best way forward is,” Agarkar explained. He mentioned that the decision was influenced by both Suryakumar's recent performance and the team's long-term strategy leading into the next World Cup cycle.

Agarkar acknowledged the difficulties of such discussions, particularly after a World Cup victory, but stated, “Shreyas is a very deserving captain.” He added that the selectors had contemplated the change for some time, and while IPL form may have been a factor, it was not the only consideration.

These developments occur during a challenging phase for Suryakumar, whose performance has seen a significant decline since taking on the captaincy role in July 2024. His batting average has plummeted from 43.60 to 25.88, and his strike rate has also dropped from 168.75 to 152.03. Nevertheless, his public demeanor remains supportive as Iyer embarks on this new journey as the leader of India's T20I team.
