Tar Heels Defeat Mountaineers 5-2, One Step Away from MCWS Championship
OMAHA, NE – The North Carolina Tar Heels took a significant step towards the Men’s College World Series final, defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers 5-2 on Sunday night at Charles Schwab Field. Second baseman Gavin Gallaher played a pivotal role in the victory, while relief pitcher Walker McDuffie showcased his skills by shutting down West Virginia’s offense.
McDuffie was instrumental in securing the win, pitching 3 2/3 solid innings after starter Ryan Lynch had a challenging outing. The game started off favorably for the Tar Heels, as Lynch managed to keep West Virginia scoreless in the first inning. Carolina quickly loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, and despite previous struggles with capitalizing on scoring opportunities, they managed to push across a run thanks to Erik Paulsen’s walk and Cooper Nicholson’s grounder that scored Owen Hull.
West Virginia answered back, narrowing the gap in the third inning and tying the game in the fourth. Although Lynch battled through difficulties, he held the score steady. The Mountaineers’ ace, Maxx Yehl, eventually found his rhythm, keeping Carolina from scoring for several innings.
However, the game shifted in the seventh when West Virginia committed two errors, placing runners on first and second with one out. Gallaher seized the moment, driving a deep hit into center field that brought in two runs. Hull then followed up with a well-placed shot over the infield to score Gallaher, extending the lead.
In the ninth inning, West Virginia rallied with two runners on base, but Caden Glauber came in to close out the game without further incident. With this victory, North Carolina remains undefeated in the MCWS, awaiting their next opponent. Meanwhile, West Virginia will need to regroup as they prepare to face Troy, who triumphed in a high-scoring contest against Ole Miss earlier in the day. The double-elimination format means the Tar Heels are just one win away from the championship series.
