Tennessee Softball Triumphs Over Texas Tech with Emma Clarke's Walk-Off Homer

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a thrilling contest, Tennessee's softball team secured a spot in the Women's College World Series semifinals by defeating Texas Tech in extra innings. Senior pitcher Karlyn Pickens delivered a stellar performance, nearly achieving a shutout against the Red Raiders, who are known for their formidable offense. A controversial play in the seventh inning allowed Texas Tech to equalize, but the Lady Vols managed to pull through with a dramatic finish.

In a pivotal moment, Taylor Pannell, a former Lady Vol who transferred to Texas Tech, scored to tie the game at one apiece in the seventh. However, junior Sage Mardjetko took the mound to close out the inning, and a remarkable diving catch by Alannah Leach kept Tennessee's hopes alive. The eighth inning saw Mardjetko maintain her composure, holding Texas Tech hitless until Emma Clarke stepped up in the ninth, hitting a leadoff home run to clinch the 2-1 victory for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee’s pitching duo, Pickens and Mardjetko, effectively stifled a Red Raiders offense that had racked up 70 runs in just seven tournament games. The Lady Vols, seeded seventh, limited their opponents to only five hits throughout the match. This win marks a significant achievement for Tennessee (49-10), as it advances to the WCWS semifinals without facing elimination for the first time since 2013, the last time it reached the finals.

Pickens recorded six strikeouts and allowed just one earned run over 6⅔ innings, throwing a total of 108 pitches. Mardjetko, who improved her record to 16-2, contributed two strikeouts in her 2⅓ innings on the mound. The Lady Vols' defense showcased exceptional skills, with standout plays from third baseman Ella Dodge and Clarke in the fourth inning, both of whom performed admirably in new infield positions.

Despite getting runners on base early, Tennessee struggled to capitalize until freshman outfielder Taelyn Holley made her mark with a solo home run in the fifth, giving her team a brief lead. Holley has been a key player during her WCWS debut, demonstrating her potential with a solid performance against Texas earlier in the tournament.

This victory not only highlights Tennessee's resilience but also underscores their strong defensive improvements as they move deeper into the tournament.
