Tigers Dominate Rays 8-0 Behind Power Hitting and Flaherty's Strong Performance
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers delivered an impressive performance on Tuesday night, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays with an 8-0 victory. Gleyber Torres opened the scoring with a leadoff home run, while Wenceel Pérez and Riley Greene also contributed with long balls to solidify the win.
Jack Flaherty (1-7) showcased his skills on the mound, striking out six batters over five-plus innings, marking his first win since September of last year. Matt Vierling also had a standout game, hitting a triple and a double while driving in two runs.
This win comes as a significant boost for the Tigers, who had been struggling with eight consecutive series losses, the longest such streak since 2019. It also marks their first back-to-back wins since early May, and their first road series victory since taking two out of three against San Diego at the season's start.
In a strong offensive display, Spencer Torkleson began the second inning with a double, leading to Pérez's 404-foot homer over the left-field fence, increasing the lead to 4-0. Greene added another run in the seventh with his own leadoff homer, bringing the score to 8-0. Flaherty limited the Rays to five hits and issued two walks, breaking a difficult stretch in which he had lost five consecutive starts and six of seven, including a 0-9 record in 14 appearances since his last win on September 10, 2025.
