Tigers Edge Rays in High-Scoring Affair Fueled by Three Consecutive Home Runs

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A remarkable display of power propelled the Detroit Tigers to a narrow 10-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, June 1, marking a thrilling start to their series at Tropicana Field. Dillon Dingler, Kerry Carpenter, and Riley Greene each launched consecutive home runs, a feat that energized the Tigers after a challenging month of May.

Dingler had an outstanding performance, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and finishing just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. His contributions included a single, two home runs, and a double. Carpenter and Greene also fell short of the cycle but had significant impacts on the game. This victory allowed the Tigers (23-38) to break a four-game losing streak and start June on a positive note, while the Rays, who hold the best record in the American League at 36-21, struggled to contain the Tigers’ offense.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch opted to rely on his bullpen after just four innings, pulling starter Ty Madden after he threw 48 pitches. Madden, making his first start since returning from injury, allowed two earned runs before exiting. The bullpen, consisting of six different relievers, managed to secure the win despite some tense moments, particularly during a four-run rally from the Rays in the eighth inning.

The Tigers initially took control of the game, scoring two runs in the first inning and then exploding for four runs in the third with back-to-back-to-back home runs off right-hander Griffin Jax. Dingler’s two-run homer, followed by solo shots from Carpenter and Greene, showcased the Tigers’ offensive potential, reminiscent of their last similar performance in 2020.

As the match progressed, the Rays attempted to mount a comeback, cutting the Tigers’ lead down to just one run in the eighth. However, reliever Will Vest managed to secure the final outs, closing the game with a scoreless ninth inning. The teams will face off again on Tuesday, with the Tigers sending right-hander Jack Flaherty to the mound against the Rays’ Steven Matz.
