UCF Knights Face Elimination After Setback to Milwaukee in Auburn Regional
In a critical matchup at the NCAA's Auburn Regional, the UCF Knights fell short against the Milwaukee Panthers, suffering a 13-6 defeat. The loss means the Knights must now win their next game to stay in contention for a spot in the finals. They will face off against Auburn at 3 p.m. on Sunday, with the winner advancing to challenge Milwaukee again later that evening.
UCF, led by head coach Rich Wallace, struggled to contain a Milwaukee team that has been on a roll, winning 22 of their last 30 games. The Panthers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, capitalizing on multiple pitching errors from the Knights. “I thought Milwaukee played an unbelievable game offensively and we helped them a little bit with some of the free stuff,” Wallace remarked after the game. “We have to figure out a way to come back tomorrow.”
Milwaukee's starting pitcher, Aric Ehmke, effectively held UCF to just two runs during his five innings on the mound. UCF's Mateo Gray, who was on the hill for the Knights, faced challenges right from the start, allowing a series of runs that put his team in a deep hole early on.
Despite some late-game efforts, including a home run by Andrew Williamson and key RBIs from DeAmez Ross and Landon Moran, the Knights were unable to recover from the initial onslaught. UCF utilized a total of six pitchers throughout the game, ultimately yielding 13 runs on nine hits while issuing nine walks.
The Knights now face a do-or-die scenario as they prepare for their matchup against Auburn, hoping to keep their tournament hopes alive.
