US Coach Pochettino Utilizes Laptop for Tactical Adjustments During Match Against Senegal
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — During a hydration break in the 24th minute of the friendly match against Senegal on Sunday, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino opted for a modern approach to convey tactical insights. Instead of using traditional methods, he gathered his players around a laptop to illustrate specific movements on the field.
Television footage captured Pochettino pointing at the screen while discussing strategies, with players attentively watching his demonstration. “Players need to think, but they also need to see," he remarked following the U.S. team's 3-2 victory.
As for the future, Pochettino noted that FIFA has yet to clarify whether the use of laptops during breaks will be permitted in the upcoming World Cup, and the organization has not responded to inquiries on the matter.
Midfielder Weston McKennie expressed appreciation for the visual learning opportunity, stating that seeing and understanding field dynamics is beneficial. Christian Pulisic echoed this sentiment, comparing the experience to halftime discussions, saying, “It's a little unique for us. But that's also what we do at halftime — we just go over some things.”
Pulisic also supported the implementation of more breaks during soccer matches, suggesting that the addition of hydration breaks offers valuable moments for teams to regroup. “I think it's a good thing,” he stated. “Like timeouts would be a good thing in soccer. I feel like it's nice to get a little regroup.”
