White Sox Power Through Injury to Munetaka Murakami, Securing Fourth Straight Win
CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox showcased their strength on Saturday, overcoming the absence of Munetaka Murakami due to a hamstring injury, to defeat the Detroit Tigers 7-1. In a thrilling game at Rate Field, attended by 29,435 fans, Edgar Quero and Colson Montgomery each hit solo home runs, while Andrew Benintendi added a two-run shot, all coming in the later innings as the White Sox extended their winning streak to four games.
With this latest victory, the White Sox improved their record to 31-27, marking a season-high four games above the .500 mark. Manager Will Venable praised the team’s resilience, stating, “When these guys create a culture where they bring a ton of energy, you hope that can sustain when you miss somebody and you have that built up. And these guys have done a great job of building that up.”
Prior to the game, the team announced Murakami’s placement on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, which is expected to sideline him for four to six weeks. Murakami, who leads the team with 20 home runs, was missed, but the squad still managed to capitalize on scoring opportunities early in the game, including a two-run first inning fueled by the wildness of Tigers starter Framber Valdez.
The Tigers managed to cut the White Sox's lead to 2-1 with a home run from Wenceel Pérez in the third inning, but starter Anthony Kay held strong, allowing just that lone run over five-plus innings. The Tigers threatened in the later innings, but reliever Grant Taylor stepped up to maintain the lead, earning praise from Kay for navigating a tricky situation.
As the game progressed, the White Sox padded their lead with runs in the seventh and eighth innings, with Quero hitting his second home run of the season and Montgomery notching his 14th. Benintendi’s two-run blast capped off the scoring, solidifying the win. “The team is playing pretty good baseball,” Quero remarked. “Playing hard every day and that’s the mentality right now.”
In response to Murakami's injury, the White Sox called up 2023 first-round draft pick Jacob Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte. Although he did not play on Saturday, Gonzalez expressed excitement about being part of the team. Celebrating his 24th birthday that day, he said, “Probably the best one so far,” highlighting his impressive performance in the minors with a .317 batting average and 19 home runs this season. Ready to contribute in any capacity, Gonzalez remarked, “I’ll play anywhere. I grew up playing everywhere and ready to help this team win some games.”
