Wyndham Clark Holds Lead at US Open as Major Champions Close In

Wyndham Clark, the former US Open titleholder, maintained his lead at Shinnecock Hills following the second round, but several prominent competitors are hot on his heels. Among them is Rory McIlroy, who appeared poised to challenge Clark's seven-under score. However, a missed six-foot putt on the ninth hole shifted his momentum, resulting in a chaotic back nine that left him finishing the day at one-under, seven strokes behind the leader.

Despite the setback, McIlroy remains optimistic, stating, "If there’s a course where you feel like you still have a chance if you’re seven back going into the weekend like I am, it’s definitely this one." He emphasized the importance of minimizing mistakes and capitalizing on birdie opportunities as part of his strategy moving forward.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele, both with major titles to their names, ended the day four shots off the lead, along with Tom Kim and the lesser-known Sam Stevens. Two-time major winners Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas sit at two under and one under, respectively, while McIlroy, a six-time major champion, is tied for tenth at even par. World number one Scottie Scheffler, also pursuing a grand slam, is at level par after carding a 68.

Reflecting on his journey, Clark, who faced criticism after a disappointing performance last year, expressed his desire to regain the trust of fans. "I’ve gotten a lot of grief since last year, rightfully so... I’m hoping I can win back the fans that I had or some new fans because it was a terrible incident," he shared. "I really feel like I can show people that I’m fun and outgoing, I’m fierce, competitive, love the game, respect the game, and I just had a bad moment."

Fitzpatrick, who played a level-par 70, is content with his position, while Schauffele shot a strong 66 to join him at three under. Notably, Joaquin Niemann received a two-stroke penalty for misconduct during the first round, marking a significant enforcement of the new code of conduct. Meanwhile, two-time major winner Jon Rahm struggled during the second round, leading to a missed cut at six over.
