Analyzing the Best Defensive Interior Groups in the NFC East

As the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys excelled in offensive rankings, the focus has now shifted to the defensive interior as the NFC East prepares for the 2026 season. With multiple teams utilizing 3-4 defensive schemes, assessing the strength of their defensive linemen becomes crucial, especially as the league evolves.

Starting with the New York Giants, they recently traded Dexter Lawrence, a top-tier defensive tackle, leaving them with DJ Reader, Shelby Harris, and Leki Fotu as their main options. However, none of these players have achieved a Pro Football Focus (PFF) rating higher than 75, which means they lack the game-changing capability that instills fear in opposing offenses. Former Cowboys defensive end Chauncey Golston, while not a regular contributor with under 175 defensive snaps, has shown promise with a run defense grade exceeding 72.3.

The Washington Commanders rank slightly higher due to the presence of Daron Payne, who, despite not currently being among the elite, can still deliver standout performances. Behind him, Tim Settle boasts a PFF pass-rush grade close to 80, and third-year player Jer'Zhan Newton has proven to be a competent pass rusher. Though Javon Kinlaw had a lackluster previous season, he remains a productive player. Additionally, the Commanders added Charles Omenihu, who was a reliable run defender with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Dallas Cowboys come in at second place, led by Quinnen Williams, a defensive tackle regarded as elite, much like Lawrence. Williams consistently poses a threat to opposing offenses, with an impressive PFF overall grade nearing 90. Alongside him, Kenny Clark offers versatility, capable of playing multiple defensive line positions effectively. Jonathan Bullard contributes as a solid run-stopping end, while young talent Otito Ogbonnia and rookie LT Overton add depth to the line.

Finally, the Philadelphia Eagles claim the top spot with a formidable duo of Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, both considered among the best in their positions. While the depth behind them is limited, Moro Ojomo stands out as a promising third option after a productive previous season. Although Byron Young struggled for impact, this top-heavy group ultimately gives the Eagles the edge in the NFC East defensive rankings.
