Angel Reese Achieves 1,000 Career Points in WNBA
COLLEGE PARK, GA ― Angel Reese celebrated a significant career achievement on Tuesday night. In a commanding 91-75 victory over the Connecticut Sun (2-9), Reese scored her sixth point with a crucial corner 3-pointer, marking the 1,000th point of her WNBA career. This milestone basket came with just one minute left in the third quarter, bringing Atlanta Dream (6-2) within a single point at 65-64 before heading into the final period. Atlanta then dominated the fourth quarter, limiting the Sun to only 10 points to secure their sixth win of the season.
“It was a big three. Angel works on her 3-point shot every day. I see her putting in the work every day, and she shot with confidence. So, congrats to Angel on her thousandth point, and that was a big three that we needed. And I feel like that helped shift the momentum,” commented guard Allisha Gray following the game.
This latest achievement follows Reese's recent record-breaking feat, where she became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 900 rebounds, accomplishing this in just 71 games. On May 29, she recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds in an 86-66 win over the Portland Fire. In her inaugural season with the Dream, Reese has already notched five double-doubles in eight games, including a performance against the Sun where she tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds. Additionally, she leads the league in offensive rebounds per game (5.4) and ranks second in total rebounds per game (11.0).
Since joining the Dream, Reese has credited head coach Karl Smesko for aiding her shooting improvement. Smesko recognized the significance of her momentum-changing shot against Connecticut, stating, “I thought (the) crowd loved it. Team loved it. I loved it. I’ll have to watch it and break it down on film, but it looked like a really good release, like the release we’ve been working on.” He added that Reese’s willingness to adapt her shot has been evident in practice, culminating in her impressive performance on the court.
