Anthony Banda Emerges as Potential Trade Target Ahead of Deadline

Last November, Anthony Banda celebrated with the Los Angeles Dodgers during their World Series parade for the second consecutive year. However, by February, he found himself on a team with a very different trajectory—the Minnesota Twins. As the trade deadline approaches, could Banda be on the move again?

The 32-year-old left-handed reliever has been a consistent presence for the Twins, who have recently struggled, holding a 27-33 record as of late May. With the team in the hunt for the final American League Wild Card spot, trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by just two games, the urgency to improve their roster is palpable.

Minneapolis General Manager Jeremy Zoll may soon receive inquiries about Banda if the Twins continue to falter as the August 3 trade deadline nears. Banda, who has made 28 appearances this season with a 5.40 ERA, remains a valuable asset. His performance, despite the ERA, showcases his potential to assist a contending team in need of left-handed relief.

Banda's impressive 94.2-mph fastball has proven effective, allowing only four hits against right-handed hitters, while his slider has been particularly effective against lefties, boasting a 41.5 percent whiff rate. With the right strategy, he could meet the expectations he set during his tenure in Los Angeles, where he posted an 8-3 record with a 3.14 ERA over two seasons, including a standout World Series performance.

Though Banda may not be the most prominent player to change teams before the deadline, his postseason experience makes him an appealing option for teams looking to bolster their bullpen. For the Twins, however, keeping him may not be beneficial if they cannot turn their season around, marking a third straight year without postseason play.
