Cadillac Triumphs in Detroit as Corvette Navigates GTD Pro Turmoil
Whelen Cadillac celebrated a significant victory at the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic, thanks to the impressive collaboration of Jack Aitken and Earl Bamber. Starting from the front position, the duo showcased outstanding performance, at one point extending their lead to an impressive 14 seconds during the 100-minute sprint of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Despite facing several late race cautions, Aitken maintained his focus and crossed the finish line 6.023 seconds ahead of his competitors on the 1.645-mile street circuit.
Aitken expressed his joy, stating, “I really wanted a win. To do it here at the home of GM and Cadillac, with so many friends and family with us. My team absolutely nailed it on the Whelen Cadillac.” This victory marks the first of the season for the team, which previously secured three second-place finishes and one third in the first four rounds. With this latest win, Aitken has taken a commanding lead in the championship standings, amassing 1,776 points, 144 points ahead of second-place Laurin Heinrich.
In the GTD Pro category, Antonio Garcia of Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports claimed victory in a thrilling finish, marking his 31st career win and his first in Detroit, alongside polesitter Alexander Sims. The race began with Bamber leading the pack cleanly from the alternate start line, but early complications included a collision involving Tom Blomqvist's Acura, which resulted in debris on the track and the first caution of the event.
As the race progressed, Aitken and his team executed flawless pit stops, allowing them to regain the lead after a series of strategic plays. Despite a late caution that briefly erased Aitken's significant lead, he successfully held off his competitors during the final laps. The chaotic nature of the GTD Pro class saw Garcia managing to fend off challenges from Jack Hawksworth, who made a late push for the lead.
Ultimately, Cadillac's strong performance and strategic execution secured them a memorable win, while Corvette showcased resilience amidst the unpredictable events of the race. This thrilling competition underscores the competitive spirit of the IMSA series, and fans can look forward to more exciting races ahead.
