Cardinals Restructure Cornerback Group Ahead of Season
As the Arizona Cardinals engage in Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the atmosphere is far from the intensity of the regular season. Players are clad in practice gear, focusing on short drills under the sweltering Tempe sun with State Farm Stadium standing empty. However, one position group has garnered attention due to noticeable changes: the cornerbacks.
Initially appearing to be a disorganized collection of players, the Cardinals have established a clearer hierarchy among their cornerbacks as OTAs progress. Will Johnson seems poised to claim one starting position as he embarks on his second year, while Denzel Burke and Max Melton are vying for the other starting role. Melton's emergence is surprising considering his struggles last season, where he started just once after the Week 8 bye due to a heel injury and performance issues.
Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis expressed optimism about Melton's development, stating, “The biggest thing with him is just understanding the stress and the strength of each call,” and noting significant growth in his comprehension of defensive strategies. Competing alongside Johnson for the starting role is Starling Thomas V, who is making strides in his recovery from a torn ACL that sidelined him last season.
Another significant shift in the cornerbacks room is the transition of Sean Murphy-Bunting to the nickel position, prompted by Garrett Williams' recovery from a torn Achilles. Murphy-Bunting, who has primarily played as an outside cornerback since 2022, is now training with the safeties. Rallis emphasized the need for quick decision-making in the nickel role, highlighting the complexities involved in covering different offensive threats closer to the line of scrimmage.
In other news, the Cardinals released kicker Joshua Karty, effectively securing the position for Chad Ryland for the time being. Despite Ryland's struggles late last season, special teams coach Michael Ghobrial noted that focusing on his follow-through has yielded promising results. Meanwhile, rookie offensive lineman Isaiah Adams has been impressively working ahead of second-round pick Chase Bisontis at right guard, as the team emphasizes the importance of experience in adapting to their new system.
