Cathedral Softball Advances to Semistate Behind Stellar Performance from Shelby Johnson
INDIANAPOLIS — Shelby Johnson's pitching journey took a significant turn in late April when she delivered her first complete game of the season, leading Cathedral to a shutout victory over Noblesville, a formidable Class 4A opponent. Johnson dominated the game with five hits allowed, two strikeouts, and one walk, which proved to be a confidence booster for the junior pitcher. "That game really helped me a lot, because I knew they were big hitters and I had to show (up)," she reflected. "That really helped my confidence. I've been better since then."
This season, Johnson has transitioned from primarily being Sidney Feczko's backup to becoming a crucial part of the pitching rotation, often stepping in as the primary reliever. As of Tuesday's 3A regional championship, she had maintained an impressive 9-0 record, alongside six saves and a 1.72 ERA across 53 innings pitched. "We fully trust in Shelby," said teammate Jordyn Hazelwood. "She came in and completely dominated some good teams like Noblesville."
During the regional final against Danville, Johnson showcased her talents once again. After a series of errors allowed Danville to reduce Cathedral’s lead from seven runs, Coach Tony Matthews turned to Johnson to close out the game. Despite facing immediate pressure from an RBI single, Johnson quickly regained control, retiring the next five batters to secure a 7-5 victory for the Irish, who are ranked No. 3 in 3A.
Cathedral's offense, aided by a four-run fourth inning highlighted by a triple from Amya Gary, laid the groundwork for the win. The Irish will now head to Jasper for the semistate, where they are set to face No. 14 Evansville Memorial. Johnson expressed confidence in the team's ability to handle the pressure of being the defending champions, stating, "We've shown that we can do it."
In a touching moment, the team honored longtime assistant coach Linda Bamrick after the game, who will retire at the end of the season following a distinguished 40-year career with the school. Bamrick has played a pivotal role in Cathedral’s athletic successes, including guiding the softball team to their first state title last year.
