Connor Roberts Reflects on Injury Struggles After Return to Welsh Squad
Connor Roberts, the Burnley and Wales defender, expressed a newfound appreciation for his career following a challenging year marked by injury. The right-back faced a significant setback, missing the entire 2025-26 season due to an Achilles problem.
Roberts made his much-anticipated comeback as a substitute in Wales' 2-1 defeat against Romania in Bucharest, 362 days after his last appearance in a match against Belgium in June 2025. His absence was felt not only at the club level, where Burnley faced relegation from the Premier League, but also nationally, as Wales fell short in their World Cup qualification efforts.
At 30 years old, Roberts reflected on the emotional toll of being sidelined. “It's been very tough,” he remarked. “It's the first real long-term injury I've ever had so I've done well to get to the age I have without having one.” He added, “Then to watch my club not do well and my country fail to qualify, it's been emotional, it's been draining and it's been really hard.” Now that he’s back on the field, Roberts believes he will cherish his accomplishments even more deeply.
During his return, coach Craig Bellamy brought Roberts onto the pitch in the 60th minute. Fellow substitute David Brooks managed to equalize shortly after entering, but an 80th-minute goal from Adrian Rus sealed Wales' defeat, marking their fourth consecutive loss in 2026 and extending their winless streak in away friendlies to 17 matches since November 2008.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Roberts was thrilled to don the Welsh jersey once again. “Personally for me, it's brilliant to be back,” he stated. “Some people are happy that I'm back, some people not so happy, but I am back and hopefully I can keep ticking over during the summer and go again next season for club and country.”
