Edwin Arroyo Achieves Milestone with First MLB Hit in Reds Debut Against Royals
In a memorable moment for both Edwin Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds, the young infielder recorded his first major league hit during his debut on June 1 against the Kansas City Royals at Great American Ball Park. Arroyo delivered a single in the bottom of the ninth inning, sealing the occasion with a significant milestone in his baseball career.
“Congratulations to Edwin Arroyo!” exclaimed Reds.TV play-by-play announcer John Sadak during the live broadcast. Analyst Barry Larkin added, “You’ll remember that one for the rest of your life. The first of hopefully many.” Despite striking out in his first three at-bats, Arroyo's late-game hit brought excitement to the Reds' fans.
Arroyo, who took the field as the starting second baseman and batted eighth, was called up from Triple-A Louisville following the injury of starting shortstop Elly De La Cruz. Prior to his promotion, Arroyo was enjoying a strong season, boasting a .323 batting average with 11 home runs for Louisville.
Ranked as the third-best prospect within the Reds organization by MLB Pipeline, Arroyo was acquired in a 2022 trade with the Seattle Mariners that involved pitcher Luis Castillo. Castillo, who had a solid tenure with the Reds, was traded for a package that included Arroyo, Noelvi Marte, Andrew Moore, and Levi Stoudt. Arroyo himself was a second-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, selected 48th overall by the Mariners just ahead of the Reds' choice of pitcher Andrew Abbott at 53rd overall.
