Fabricio Andrey Reflects on Deep Bond with Diogo Reis Ahead of Upcoming Match
Before rising to prominence in the world of mixed martial arts, Fabricio “Hokage” Andrey and his close friend, Diogo “Baby Shark” Reis, shared a humble beginning in the grappling gyms of Manaus. Their enduring friendship, forged through shared struggles and aspirations in the sport, remains a cornerstone of their lives as they pursue their professional careers. Andrey is set to continue his unbeaten streak of 3-0 in the promotion when he faces British competitor Owen Jones at ONE Fight Night 44, scheduled for June 26 at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Reflecting on their journey, the 26-year-old Andrey recalled the early days spent honing their skills together. As they progressed through the ranks of colored belts, they formed a bond that transcends their separate paths—Andrey with Alliance and Reis with Agora Jiu-Jitsu. Despite a two-year age difference, Andrey naturally took on a protective role, often escorting Reis home after training sessions. “He is my friend. Diogo is my brother, my little brother,” Andrey said, emphasizing the strength of their connection.
The duo has developed distinct grappling styles that complement each other, with Andrey's aggressive approach contrasting sharply with Reis's strategic brilliance. Andrey admitted, “The main difference between Diogo and me is that... I'm just going forward and trying to submit, and I don’t strategize too much. And sometimes I lose fights because of a lack of strategy.” On the other hand, he appreciates Reis's analytical mindset, which helps him refine his own tactics: “Every session with him is good because I’m learning a lot from him about jiu-jitsu, especially the competitive side.”
Andrey takes great pride in Reis’s accomplishments, especially after his recent victory over Yuki Takahashi, extending his own record in ONE Championship. “He’s had amazing performances,” Andrey noted, recognizing the hard work they both put into their craft. The pair’s friendship has been tested in competition, notably at the 2022 ADCC World Championships, where they faced off in a challenging quarterfinal match.
As Reis now seeks to expand his legacy by moving into a heavier weight class, speculation about a future rematch grows. Andrey expressed no reservations about the possibility of fighting Reis on a grand stage, stating, “Of course! Of course I’ll fight my friend. Show me the money. This is not a problem for us.” Their enduring camaraderie suggests that no matter the outcome, they will always support each other's journeys in the sport.
