Gage Wood Shines in Double-A as Phillies No. 2 Prospect

A new chapter appears to be unfolding within the Philadelphia Phillies organization as Gage Wood, the team's second-ranked pitching prospect, showcases his skills with the Reading Fightin Phils. Selected as the Phillies' first-round pick in 2025, Wood is making a name for himself in Double-A after recently being promoted from Low-A Clearwater.

During his latest outing in Binghamton, the 22-year-old right-hander pitched four innings, allowing four hits, including a home run in the first inning. He struck out four batters while issuing no walks. Despite the Fightin Phils falling to the Rumble Ponies 2-1, Wood's performance continues to highlight his potential. Over his three starts in Double-A, he has thrown 11 innings, surrendering just three earned runs alongside an impressive 14 strikeouts.

“I just want to stay where I’m at, be where my feet are, take everything one day at a time, keep executing, and try to give my team a chance to win each time I go out there,” Wood remarked about his approach following his recent start. Although some fans had hoped to see Wood added to the bullpen for a postseason run, Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski opted to focus on his development in the minors.

Wood's journey began with a solid start to the 2026 season in Clearwater, where he recorded a 3.42 ERA over eight games, prompting his call-up on May 18. Known for his potent fastball, which typically ranges from 94-96 mph and has even touched 99 mph, Wood is viewed by the Phillies as a future mainstay in the starting rotation.

“You can’t really look that far ahead,” Wood stated regarding his future aspirations. His enthusiastic presence on the mound and his competitive spirit have been noted by teammates, including catcher Kehden Hettiger, who praised Wood's electric energy and pitching repertoire, which includes a developing slider and splitter.

As Reading fans eagerly watch Wood's progress, the young pitcher expressed gratitude for being part of the Phillies organization, stating, “I love it. Everyone here is awesome, everyone treats you like family.” Wood is set to take the mound again at home next week as the Fightin Phils face off against the Portland Sea Dogs, continuing their campaign for a winning record in the Eastern League.
