Gauff's Title Defense Concludes as Sabalenka and Osaka Advance to Round of 16
Coco Gauff's hopes of defending her French Open title were dashed in the third round on Saturday, as Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka both secured their spots in the last 16. Gauff, the fourth seed, fell to 28th-seeded Anastasia Potapova with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, marking her earliest exit from Roland Garros since her debut six years ago.
The American, who was once a break ahead in the final set, saw her lead slip away as Potapova won five consecutive games, leaving Gauff frustrated. "I think at the US Open it did a lot more but honestly this time it didn't. I wasn't really nervous," Gauff noted, reflecting on her performance. "That's what's more frustrating because I felt like I learned a lot from that US Open experience and I'm a better player since then and I just don't think I portrayed that today."
Potapova celebrated her victory, calling it one of her top three career wins, and with this match, she matched her best Grand Slam result by reaching the fourth round, a feat she last achieved at the French Open two years ago. She will face 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya next.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka defeated Australia's Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 in a swift 76 minutes, setting up a highly anticipated matchup against Osaka. The two players, both 28 and major champions, have faced each other multiple times this season. "I'm just ready for the fight," Sabalenka declared, while Osaka, after overcoming American Iva Jovic, expressed her growing calmness as she progresses in the tournament.
In other tournament news, the men's draw remains unpredictable after the shocking exits of top seeds, making Felix Auger-Aliassime a strong contender following his victory over Brandon Nakashima. He will meet Alejandro Tabilo next, while other players like Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Arnaldi also advanced after grueling matches.
