Jason DeCaro Leads UNC to Victory with Complete Game Shutout

In a pivotal matchup on Saturday, Jason DeCaro showcased his pitching prowess, delivering a complete-game shutout that propelled the University of North Carolina to a 4-0 victory over USC. This performance not only halted USC’s momentum but also extended the super regional series to a decisive game. The Tar Heels are now just one win away from making their second appearance at the College World Series under head coach Scott Forbes. Meanwhile, USC is eager to secure its first trip to Omaha in over 25 years in the upcoming showdown.

After the game, DeCaro reflected on his performance, emphasizing the importance of starting strong. “(I was) just getting ahead early. We figured that we would get ahead, they’re an aggressive team. So just going right after guys,” he explained. He credited Coach Gaines for his support, recalling a moment before the ninth inning when Gaines encouraged him to pitch confidently. “You’re in control, so pitch like it, just go after them,” Gaines advised.

DeCaro noted that it took him a little time to find his rhythm. “It took me a little bit to settle in today — but after the third inning, had a couple quick outs in that inning and came back in the dugout and told Coach Gaines that I felt way better right there than I did the first two,” he said.

The atmosphere in the stadium also played a crucial role in his performance. “I think (the crowd when I walked out for the 9th) was huge. Gave me a little bit of adrenaline right there,” he remarked. DeCaro took Gaines’ advice to heart, focusing on utilizing the crowd's energy as he approached the final inning. “It’s not about really executing the pitch, it’s just about getting after it out there for that ninth inning,” he added.

As the teams prepare for the deciding game on Sunday, both sides are poised for a thrilling conclusion to the series.
