Josh Harris discusses Sixers building with star big man Joel Embiid
CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to head into the offseason finding ways to improve the roster. The Sixers have some phenomenal talent on the roster led by Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey as well as rising young star VJ Edgecombe.
With that being said, there is a school of thought that the Sixers need to move on from Embiid when considering his lack of availability. The big fella has played in a grand total of 57 games over the past two seasons as he was limited by a knee injury, an oblique strain, hip and ankle issues, and an appendectomy late in the 2025-26 season that caused him to miss the first three games of Round 1. He also missed Game 2 of Round 2 with the hip and ankle issues.
AS the Sixers head into the offseason, there are decisions to make. Embiid will begin a 3-year $193 million extension in the 2026-27 season, which one can argue that he absolutely deserves when considering how dominant he has been in his career. Sixers managing partner Josh Harris hears and understands the concerns around Embiid, but he's looking forward to having him back.
"I think, Joel--like we win as a team, we lose as a team," Harris said. "Bob (Myers) said it's not one player. I think putting all the hopes on one player is the wrong place to be. I think that he's an important player on our roster, and he's a warrior, and he's also, you know, some of the things that you said (the availability) are also true. So, I think we're looking forward to welcoming him back on our team."
To Harris' point, Embiid fought through so many problems to be there for the Sixers. He still averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the 38 games he played in 2025-26. He also led the 3-1 comeback in Round 1 to eliminate the Boston Celtics. He had 33 points in the Game 5 win and 34 in the Game 7 win.
Harris and the Sixers are committed to having Embiid on the roster and believe they can win with him as a cornerstone. As Philadelphia moves forward, it has to hope that the 2023 MVP winner can be healthy on the floor as time moves on.
