NASCAR Takes on New Terrain at Coronado Naval Base with Shane van Gisbergen in the Spotlight

Shane van Gisbergen has quickly made a name for himself in the NASCAR world, particularly excelling on road courses. The New Zealand native, who has a rich background in V8 Supercars and GT Racing, made history in 2023 by winning his Cup Series debut at the Chicago Street Course, becoming the first driver to do so since 1963. In his inaugural full-time season with Trackhouse Racing, he achieved five victories and secured a spot in the playoffs. With seven road course wins in the Cup Series and five in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, he is just two wins shy of tying Jeff Gordon's record of nine road course victories in the Cup Series and AJ Allmendinger's 14 across all of NASCAR's top series.

This weekend, van Gisbergen faces a unique challenge at the Anduril 250, where NASCAR will race for the first time on an active military base at Naval Base Coronado, located near San Diego. The 3.4-mile course, featuring 16 turns, is regarded as the longest in the Cup Series this season and presents a blend of new pavement, worn-out base roads, and even train tracks. “Every corner looks like someone has had an issue,” van Gisbergen remarked after inspecting the track. “I don’t think there is a possibility of doing a perfect lap here.”

The race is set against the backdrop of the USS Carl Vinson, with drivers expected to cover approximately 255 miles over 75 laps. The track's construction required 17 days and includes more than 3,000 barriers, along with 6.8 miles of protective walling and fencing. Van Gisbergen recognizes the complexity of the course, stating, “It’s going to be a really rough and technical course, a lot of unknowns.” Despite these challenges, he is considered a favorite to win, having triumphed in six of his last seven road course events.

While van Gisbergen enjoys strong support, he remains cautious about the competition. “It pisses me off a bit,” he expressed regarding the expectations of an easy victory. “I hold my competition at a really high level.” Fellow drivers such as Tyler Reddick, who leads the Cup Series points standings, and three-time winner Denny Hamlin are also in contention, each bringing their own strengths to the race.

Additionally, the event will see the return of seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, along with former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen making his NASCAR debut, adding further excitement to this unique race. NASCAR's foray into new venues raises questions about future events at similar locations, with officials expressing hope for more innovative racing experiences to come.
