Ole Miss Baseball Eliminated from CWS Following Controversial Balk Call

OMAHA, NE — The Ole Miss baseball team's hopes in the College World Series came to an abrupt end due to a contentious balk call against pitcher Hunter Elliott. Holding a four-run advantage in the fifth inning, Ole Miss was in a precarious situation with Troy having the bases loaded and two outs. Elliott was penalized for a balk when he raised his hand to his ear, ball in hand, in an attempt to hear the pitchcom, then stepped off the mound. This decision allowed Troy (39-31) to score a run, which set the stage for a pivotal moment when Troy's Sean Darnell followed with a single, driving in two more runs in the eventual 12-8 victory over Ole Miss.

Entering the fifth with a 6-2 lead, the Rebels saw their advantage slip away as Troy rallied for seven consecutive runs, culminating in Ole Miss's elimination from the tournament. Despite the uproar from fans at Charles Schwab Field, Elliott refused to blame the balk for the loss, focusing instead on the subsequent hit. "I needed to make the next pitch," he stated. "The balk doesn't kill you if you don't give up the base hit right after."

Elliott expressed surprise at the umpire's ruling and noted that he did not receive any clarification on the call. ESPN's rules analyst Scott Cline supported the umpire's judgment, while fellow analyst Ben McDonald questioned why a balk was called this time but not in previous instances where Elliott had attempted to adjust his pitchcom. "It's total judgment of the umpire," Cline remarked. "He felt he'd started to bring his hands together, and then he stopped, and then stepped off."

Following the call, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco approached first base umpire Billy Van Raaphorst for clarification and echoed Elliott's sentiments, highlighting that the balk was a minor issue in a game filled with missed chances for the Rebels. "As frustrated as everybody is, (Elliott) is right," Bianco acknowledged.

This balk marked the first time Elliott had been penalized for such an infraction in three full seasons. He concluded his outing after 4⅔ innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, four walks, and striking out nine batters. Prior to this game, the Rebels had a perfect 7-0 record when Elliott took the mound in an NCAA Tournament game.
