Ole Miss Prepares to Face Auburn in Super Regional Showdown
OXFORD – After successfully securing their spot in the super regionals, the Ole Miss Rebels are gearing up to take on the Auburn Tigers in a highly anticipated best-of-three series. The second-seeded Rebels (39-21) will face the top-seeded Tigers (42-20) starting Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, with the second game scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. A decisive Game 3, if needed, will be determined at a later date. The victor of this super regional will advance to the College World Series.
Ole Miss charged through the Lincoln Regional, achieving a standout performance that included a win against host Nebraska and two thrilling extra-inning victories over No. 3 seed Arizona State. The Rebels' bullpen was particularly impressive, allowing just four earned runs across 17 innings. Key players such as sophomore starter Taylor Rabe, who fanned nine batters in six innings against Nebraska, and junior catcher Austin Fawley were recognized in the all-regional team for their contributions.
Highlighting the Rebels' recent success was junior second baseman Dom Decker, who played a pivotal role in their advancement by hitting a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning of their last game. Reflecting on the moment, Decker shared, “It was really cool. It was kind of everything you really dream about. You practice for those moments, you train for these moments.”
Auburn, the fourth national seed, navigated the challenges of its regional by bouncing back from an initial loss to Milwaukee, ultimately defeating the Panthers twice in the final to claim their spot. The Tigers are a formidable team, boasting a 3.62 ERA, which leads the SEC, and a striking 3.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio, the best in the nation. Outfielder Bristol Carter has also made headlines with his impressive 30 stolen bases, ranking third in the SEC.
As the teams did not meet during the regular season, Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco acknowledges the lack of detailed insight into Auburn's current form. However, he recognizes the strengths of Butch Thompson's squad, noting, “You know why they’re good. You know that they do everything really well. But most importantly, they pitch it better than anybody in our league.” Bianco remains aware of the Tigers’ balanced offensive capabilities, which include power hitting and aggressive base running.
