Pirates’ 2024 Trade Deadline Deal Might Haunt Them in the Future

The Pittsburgh Pirates' activity during the 2024 trade deadline produced several transactions that ultimately yielded minimal benefits for either party involved. While Bryan De La Cruz struggled and was later non-tendered by the Pirates, the Miami Marlins have already released one of the prospects they received, and the other has also underperformed. Jalen Beeks, who briefly joined the Pirates, was merely a temporary addition, and the Colorado Rockies have since moved on from Luis Peralta. Similarly, the trades for Billy Cook and Nick Yorke have not significantly benefited the Baltimore Orioles or the Boston Red Sox.

However, one trade from that deadline stands out as a potential misstep for the Pirates. They made a notable move by acquiring veteran utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up infield prospect Charles McAdoo in the process. At that time, Kiner-Falefa was enjoying a career year, boasting a batting line of .292/.338/.420 across 281 plate appearances, along with solid defensive metrics at multiple infield positions.

In contrast, McAdoo had shown great promise after being drafted in the 11th round in 2023. He started his professional career with impressive numbers, hitting .320/.399/.556 between High-A Greensboro and Double-A Altoona, showcasing both power and speed on the basepaths. Although he had a relatively high strikeout rate, he balanced it with a commendable walk rate and displayed power potential with 15 home runs.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, Kiner-Falefa's performance did not meet expectations. He ended the season with a disappointing .256/.288/.328 line, reflecting more of his previous struggles than the success he had achieved earlier that year. His time in Pittsburgh concluded when he was placed on waivers by the end of August 2025, only to be claimed by the Blue Jays, the same team he had been traded from.

Meanwhile, McAdoo's trajectory took a positive turn after the trade. Although he faced challenges initially, he improved significantly in 2025 and 2026, earning a call-up to the majors. His recent performance includes a .248/.330/.419 batting line and notable power production, further solidifying his status as a valuable utility player. While he may not have been seen as a future superstar, the Pirates may have let go of a reliable role player for an infielder who ultimately contributed little to their success.
