Richard Jefferson Analyzes Spurs’ Strategy to Counter Jalen Brunson, Drawing Parallels to Cavs' Tactics Against Steph Curry
Richard Jefferson, a former NBA player, contends that the San Antonio Spurs are employing a defensive strategy against Jalen Brunson that mirrors how the Cleveland Cavaliers once defended Stephen Curry. As the NBA Finals intensify, maintaining rhythm has become as crucial as making shots, and Brunson remains the key late-game player for the New York Knicks. However, the Spurs aim to disrupt his game with physical pressure at every turn.
Jefferson, who experienced this defensive approach firsthand during his time with the Cavaliers, shared insights on social media platform X. He explained, “When we [Cleveland Cavaliers] played against Steph Curry in the Finals, it was our job to beat him up like that.” He emphasized that the intent was not to play dirty, stating, “It was just, ‘Foul him! Foul him!’ in a physical nature.”
The strategy focuses on exhausting star guards without crossing the line into unsportsmanlike conduct. Jefferson noted that the Cavaliers aimed to disrupt Curry’s rhythm by applying physicality—bumping him off his routes and pushing him through screens. The Spurs are now employing a similar tactic against Brunson, making every touch and drive a challenge.
Brunson, like Curry, thrives in open space. While Curry relies on clear opportunities for three-point shots, Brunson needs precise footwork and angles to navigate the floor effectively. From 2015 to 2018, the Cavaliers’ defensive strategy was to deny Curry any comfort, with players like J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert applying relentless pressure. San Antonio is adopting this same philosophy with Brunson, utilizing their size and aggressive defense to make his game increasingly difficult.
This approach won’t eliminate Brunson’s impact, much like it didn’t completely stifle Curry. However, it has the potential to increase the effort required to lead the Knicks’ offense, a necessary adjustment for the Spurs if they hope to extend the series.
