Saugatuck Girls Soccer's Historic Run Concludes with Regional Final Defeat

FENNVILLE - The Saugatuck girls soccer team ventured into uncharted territory as they faced Kalamazoo Christian in the regional finals. This season marked a significant milestone for the Trailblazers, who had never previously advanced past the regional semifinals. However, their luck changed on June 2, when they secured a remarkable victory against Michigan Lutheran, propelling them into the regional finals.

Unfortunately, their impressive journey came to an end with a 6-0 loss to Kalamazoo Christian on June 4. "We made it farther than anyone else, and I don't think anyone expected that. I am going to remember how far we have come," said Saugatuck coach Neal Phillips. He praised his team's resilience through a tumultuous season, emphasizing the camaraderie and determination that made their achievement special.

Senior Neave Rewa expressed profound pride in her team's accomplishments, stating, "It means way more than I can put into words. From the beginning of the season to where we are now, I am just so proud of everyone. That adds to the legacy of Saugatuck soccer." This year marked not only the soccer team's historic advancement but also notable achievements from other sports within the school, including the baseball team winning districts for the first time in a decade and the track team placing fourth in the state.

The game saw Virginia Cernugel make an impressive save in the early stages against a Kalamazoo Christian breakaway. However, the Comets quickly took control, scoring their first goal with just 26 minutes left in the first half, followed by two more before halftime. They maintained their dominance in the second half, scoring an additional three goals as they capitalized on their speed and size against the Saugatuck defense.

Kalamazoo Christian will move on to face Harbor Springs in the state semifinals on June 9. Reflecting on the match, Phillips noted, "Momentum was huge in this game. We were punching up a little bit and we needed to make the impact first... We have a lot of young players and I don't see why we can't get here again."
