Sean O'Malley Responds to Aiemann Zahabi's Striking Claims: 'I’m Not Stupid'

As the anticipation builds for the bantamweight clash at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14 in Washington, D.C., Sean O'Malley is not letting Aiemann Zahabi's bold assertions distract him. Zahabi (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC), who is on a remarkable seven-fight winning streak, recently proclaimed that he possesses superior striking skills compared to O'Malley (19-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC), known for his impressive knockout power.

While O'Malley respects Zahabi's confidence, he views the claims as a strategic distraction. "I appreciate the, 'Hey, look over here.' He knows his way to victory is going to be to try to grapple me," O'Malley explained to MMA Junkie. "I'm not stupid. He's not stupid. He's saying these things to get us to be like, 'Oh, he's not going to wrestle.' But come on, man. I'm not stupid. I may look stupid, but yeah."

Initially, O'Malley aimed for a rematch with current champion Petr Yan but instead finds himself facing Zahabi, acknowledging the significance of this matchup for his opponent. "At what point do you give him a big fight? This is the point," O'Malley remarked. "This is the biggest fight of his life. In a sense, it's the biggest fight of my life, too. I don't look at him as an Aljo or a Petr Yan or a Merab. I know there's levels to this game and I believe I'm on a different level."

O'Malley recognizes Zahabi's skill and determination, affirming, "Do I think he's deserving? Absolutely. To go on a seven-fight winning streak in the UFC, you have to be." As Zahabi steps into the octagon, he will have UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre in his corner, a fact that O'Malley appreciates. "GSP's a legend," he stated. "It'll be cool to be in his presence. He's one of those rare guys amongst rare guys."
