Texas Longhorns Dominate Tarleton State 16-2 to Reach Regional Final
The No. 6 Texas Longhorns showcased their prowess on Saturday, avenging a previous defeat to Tarleton State with a resounding 16-2 victory in the Austin Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. This performance was highlighted by a spectacular five-run second inning, featuring three consecutive home runs that dramatically shifted the momentum in Texas's favor.
Following a 15-1 triumph by UC Santa Barbara over Holy Cross earlier in the day, Texas secured their spot in the regional final set for Sunday. The Longhorns initially threatened in the first inning when Aiden Robbins earned a walk and Carson Tinney was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Temo Becerra to deliver an RBI single, marking his 200th career hit.
Despite missing opportunities to extend their lead during the first inning, Texas's Dylan Volantis dominated on the mound, particularly with a crucial play at second base that prevented a Tarleton State double. The game took a decisive turn in the second inning, where Robbins, Tinney, and Anthony Pack launched back-to-back-to-back home runs, propelling the Longhorns to a commanding 6-0 lead.
Continuing their offensive onslaught, Texas scored additional runs, including a solo homer from Ethan Mendoza in the third inning. The team's relentless pressure was evident as they tallied five runs in the fourth through a combination of walks and errors, maintaining their dominance throughout the game.
With Volantis striking out seven batters over 6.2 innings, Texas set a new program record for single-season strikeouts at 619. A late home run by Adrian Rodriguez capped the scoring at 16-2. Texas will now face off against the winner of the UC Santa Barbara and Tarleton State matchup at 5 p.m. Central on Sunday, aiming for advancement to the super regionals.
